DVD Tuesday…sorta

Hey folks,

I’m thinking from this point out Tuesdays are going to be DVD days; a rundown of what came out today and my thoughts/feelings depending on whether I saw anything or not. Unfortunately since over half the genre it seems goes direct to DVD these days, with nary a moment in theaters, the odds on me having seen something every week are kinda slim. Therefore a lot of Tuesdays are going to go like this one; today we’re going to talk about a movie I’m looking forward to seeing.

As luck would have it this Friday a little film called Super 8 is hitting theaters. I have already fandangoed (it’s totally a word….f*** you) tickets for this weekend though I’ll be putting off the review till Monday in order to allow one or two of my ten readers to actually see the thing.

Bring it on Abrams!

Ok so when I do posts like this I’m going to give you the pros and cons of any potential movie going decision (with ticket prices the way they are I feel this is only ethical) since I haven’t actually seen the movie yet I’m going to give you as many reasons I can think of to see it, and as many as I can think of that you should avoid it.

  1. The teaser trailer put me in a chokehold about a year or so ago. It reminded me of the last time I’d seen a cryptic ass trailer so dark I could barely see anything. Yup I’m a Cloverfield fan and one of the quickest ways to convince us something will be totally awesome is to TELL US ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT IT. We’re cool like that. If you did not have the opportunity to see the awesomeness follow the link – http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xd9qld_super-8-teaser-trailer_shortfilms
  2. Dude did you see that!? Something just went all Danny Trejo on that freight car!
  3. J.J. Abrams- ok this is still kinda the Cloverfield, Fringe thing. Also he made the Star Trek remake which gave me a rosetta stone for an awful lot of conversations with Bright Dyke (my scifi obsessed girlfriend…yeah we know Spock/Bones forever baby…) This guy knows how to keep my attention, and occasionally how to scare the hell out of me. For a prime example anybody remember these guys?

chompa chompa chompa chompa.........

4. Steven Spielberg is the producer. This is another one of those times I’m allowing myself to let my emotions get the better of me. Spielberg made Jaws which is my absolute favorite movie ever. Plus with a few notable exceptions, he generally doesn’t endorse clunkers.

chompa chompa chompa chompa....

5. It got an 81% fresh rating on http://www.rottentomatoes.com which while certainly not indicative of a movie I’ll love; usually at least means it won’t be The Happening which may be the worst movie ever made. (It got an 18% rotten rating and like a dumbass I went anyway, that movie is the reason M. Night and I don’t talk anymore but we’ll go over that at a later date)

  1. This might not even be a monster movie. I mean from the trailers after the teaser it still looks like it’s doing a decent imitation, but like I said I know virtually nothing about the plot of this film.
  2. Dude did you see those adorable children? Severe hypothetical monster block…
  3. J.J. Abrams- I know, but this guy also did LOST which is universally agreed upon to be the most convoluted project ever done. I know people who’ve watched the entire series twice who still aren’t sure what exactly happened.

chompa chompa.....?

4. Steven Spielberg- This is mostly because J.J. Abrams has said this is a tribute film to Mr. Spielberg’s early work…which included E.T.. I hated E.T. I know this is mildly blasphemous but I did, I hated that little f***er even when I was little. I don’t need every alien movie to be a gorefest but this thing was just diabetic coma sweet and makes me want to puke a little.

I was hoping for an autopsy scene...Yeah that's right you little bastard you don't get to chompa chompa...

5. It got an 81% rating on http://www.rottentomatoes.com. It’s called symmetry folks. Also the all mighty Tomato’s ratings are based on an amalgamation of like actual film critics ratings. People who get paid to watch movies. People who hate every movie that I love. People with no souls. If they liked it I might be screwed.

Hope this gives you something to think about. I know I just shook my resolve a little…

Your newly conflicted Screamstress,

-Fright Dyke

P.S. For any of you who really wanted to know these are the genre films that came out on DVD today:

Rubber- killer tire- nuff said.

Exorcismus- it’s in spanish but I think the title says it all.

Tortured- Bill Mosely in a low budget Power Tools Behaving Badly film.
